FAREWELL TO SENIORS TYLER DOTY AND NICK WRIGHT
Another season, another close to a football career. In week eleven of the 2016 NCAA season, two Hilliard Davidson football alumni suited up for their final collegiate football game. Tyler Doty and Nick Wright both graduated from Davidson in 2013, both went the D3 route for college football, and both are expected to graduate with their undergraduate degree this school year. However, their journey has only just started.
Doty chose to study pre-med at the pride of Ohio academic schools, Case Western Reserve University. His freshman year, he started out as a reserve linebacker, moved to defensive end for his sophomore and junior years, and dabbled at nose guard before switching back to defensive end his senior season. He was a captain this season, lettered four times, and earned All-Academic recognition in the University Athletic Association conference for the third consecutive year.
Tyler's father, Jeff (class of '82), also played college football while studying pre-med. The elder Doty lettered as a quarterback at Louisville in 1983, before transferring home to Ohio State. As a Buckeye, he was a backup to three future NFL quarterbacks in Mike Tomczak, Jim Karsatos and Tom Tupa.
An injury kept Tyler out for about half of this season, including last weekends Senior Day game. However, this season he still managed to register 16 tackles, a tackle for loss and one interception for the 9-1 Case Western football team. For his career, he totaled 55 tackles, 3 sacks, 8 tackles for loss and one pick. Case also went 24-15 during his four year career.
While Case Western went 9-1 this season, they did not qualify for an at-large bid in the D3 playoffs.
Nick Wright attended Capital University, a hot bed for teachers and coaches. Like coaches Brian White and Ryan Aleshire before him, Wright is an education major and hopes to become a history teacher and coach. Last Saturday, Capital finished their season at 4-6 with a loss to Heidelberg, and Wright polished off a pretty solid career.
In four seasons, Wright lettered four times at defensive tackle. The 2016 season was easily his best, registering 32 tackles, 1 sack, 3 tackles for loss and forcing an OAC conference best 3 fumbles. For his career, he tallied 62 tackles, 2 sacks, 8 tackles for loss and 3 forced fumbles.
The Wright family will have another senior night to attend next year, as Ben Wright, a junior running back on the Wildcat football team, will be a senior at Davidson during the 2017 season.
