The Hilliard Davidson High School football team tuned up for its showdown with Dublin Coffman by beating host Worthington Kilbourne 31-0 on Friday, Oct. 7.
The Wildcats improved to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the OCC-Central Division. They play host to Coffman on Friday, Oct. 14.
Kilbourne dropped to 2-5 and 1-3.
The Shamrocks improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the league with a 20-10 win over Hilliard Darby on Friday, Oct. 7. Upper Arlington, a 76-0 winner over Central Crossing on Friday, Oct. 7, also is 4-0 in the league.
Davidson turned in a dominating performance defensively, holding Kilbourne to no first downs and minus-4 yards in the first half.
Kilbourne did not get a first down until late in the third quarter when quarterback Brian Miller gained 9 yards on a third-and-7 from his team’s 30-yard line.
Davidson had a 15-3 advantage in first downs.
“I thought the defense did a great job getting us the ball in good field position tonight on several occasions,” Davidson coach Brian White said. “If they can do a great job getting us field position on the defensive side then the offense can do a great job of maintaining time of possession. That’s why we like to consider ourselves a full unit. Not just a good defense or a good offense or good special teams, but you have to have it all if you’re going to be good and beat some of the great teams we have to play.”
The Wildcats scored on their first possession, as senior running back Alex Mickley capped a 10-play, 48-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run with 4 minutes, 26 seconds left in the first quarter.
After Nick Wright recovered a Kilbourne fumble, Mickley scored on a 1-yard run to give his team a 14-0 lead four seconds into the second quarter.
Jack Johns’ 20-yard field goal with 4:08 left in the first half pushed the lead to 17-0.
Davidson continued to dominate in the second half, as it took nearly six minutes off the clock on the first possession in moving 79 yards on 10 plays, capped by Mickley’s 8-yard touchdown run.
Senior quarterback Brandon Gleim’s 9-yard scoring run late in the quarter capped the scoring. Gleim rushed for 73 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.
Davidson senior defensive back Chris Harris had an interception in the fourth quarter.
Kilbourne coach Vince Trombetti was pleased with his team’s effort against a team that is vying for a postseason berth.
“I thought they played their hearts out tonight,” Trombetti said. “I was concerned with our youth, were we going to be able to be physical enough with them. I thought we were. Ultimately, they got the ball in the end zone, but I thought our kids did a great job standing in there and competing.”
White was concerned about his team being called for nine penalties for 97 yards.
